Safran

Restaurant

Now one of the most renowned Indian restaurants in Mauritius, Safran offers a sophisticated dining experience. Located in Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Hotel, Safran is situated above the main level of the hotel giving you the opportunity to watch the hotel’s excellent menu of entertainment while enjoying fine Indian cuisine. Safran is very popular, therefore we recommend you make a reservation as far in advance as possible.

Two tiers. Teak floor, open side pavilion with bamboo shutters, high thatch ceiling, low hanging Indian style lamps, candlelit tables draped in white linens, extremely comfortable padded armchairs, covered in chiffon. Upper tier of restaurant has open kitchen with tandoor ovens on view. Waiters wear traditional Indian dress.

Contemporary take on Indian classics with a Mauritian twist. Traditional flavours and spices of India are mixed with modern cooking techniques. A la carte and tasting menus with wine pairing are available. Dishes are designed to be shared. We recommend tandoori salmon, crispy papad seabass and paper dosa for appetizers and for main courses – slow cooked spicy lamb shank, lobster tandoori, chicken dum biryani and paneer burji. You really should try the motichoor ladoo for dessert. If this is not to your taste, try Safran chocolate delight or a kulfi instead. If Indian cuisine is new to you we recommend you try one of the tasting menus.

All tables for two on the lower tier, overlooking the beach, are a good option but table 5 is the most romantic and intimate. If Indian cooking is your passion, ask for a stool at the counter of the open kitchen from where you can watch chefs at work.

Location: On the east coast of the island at Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Hotel
