Indya

Inside the Manor House at JW Marriott Resort, overlooking the tea garden.

Teak polished floors, carved wood furniture, brightly upholstered chairs and undressed wood tables. Beamed ceiling features unusual Indian style lights. Floor to ceiling doors lead out to terrace overlooking the tea garden and pool. Terrace has candlelit tables, floor standing lanterns and a romantic feel.

A contemporary twist on authentic Indian dishes with Tandoori and Goan specialities. Appetisers we recommend are crisp potato galettes with cumin, Goan style semolina crusted sea bass and slow cooked chicken in clotted cream and Himalayan salt spice. For main course we urge you to try braised lamb with onions and Punjabi spices, Kabuli chickpeas simmered in Darjeeling tea with house garam masala or Wok tossed blue water prawns in Kadhai gravy. Be aware – portions are on the generous side so be careful if you decide to order side dishes such as dhal or Indian breads. You should also try one of the Indian inspired cocktails or Lassi while perusing the menu.

Impressive wine list with selections from all over the world including an extensive choice of French wines.

The Banana Grill

Obsessed over quality, we take great pride in our products, our people & our place. The Banana Beach Club & Gourmet Grill are well known for their natural tropical setting and friendly atmosphere. The Banana is without a doubt the best known bar in Mauritius and “the place” on the island for live music and just chilling out. Since 1994, we have grown from a small boutique bar to a popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike. The towering Flamboyant in the middle of the bar was planted many years ago and has enjoyed its vantage from a mere twig to a towering icon of Grand Bay. We don’t doubt the stories it could tell…

The Banana Bar is the only bar on the island with a fine restaurant and nightclub. The Gourmet Grill has the advantage of an extensive menu and being part of the Bar’s wonderful ambiance. If you wish to just chill out and enjoy the cool tropical atmosphere, have a wonderful diner, or party into the night, rest assured that you will have an enjoyable experience with us.

Le Cafe des Arts

A fusion of fine art and dining

Le Café des Arts aspires to combine art and gastronomy in the same way the different cultures of Mauritius grew together back in the day. While infusing their menu with cultural and artistic value, they also include classic European dishes into their interpretation of traditional Mauritian cuisine. Art and creativity can be both seen on the plate and tasted in the dish; the restaurant is also part of an art gallery and a museum close by.

In the heart of Trou d’eau Douce, overlooking a large banyan tree that is over a hundred years old, the sugar mill has become the setting for a gourmet restaurant. In the evening the lights illuminate the stone building, enveloping it in a seductive atmosphere. Inside the paintings of Maniglier, Matisse’s last student, are revealed like the watermark of his life.

Draped in black damask on which large ceramic plates bearing the image of a painting are placed, the tables are set with art and flair. In a ballet worthy of a 5* hotel, you can delight in a wonderfully cooked lobster, a braised medallion of palm heart, a tuna tartare, or sea bream. As for fishr, the bourgeois is a dish fit for a king…..for one evening dinner feels like a journey to another place where the soul and roots of Mauritius swirl in an artistic surge like no other.

It is unique, magical and delicious

Safran

Now one of the most renowned Indian restaurants in Mauritius, Safran offers a sophisticated dining experience. Located in Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Hotel, Safran is situated above the main level of the hotel giving you the opportunity to watch the hotel’s excellent menu of entertainment while enjoying fine Indian cuisine. Safran is very popular, therefore we recommend you make a reservation as far in advance as possible.

Two tiers. Teak floor, open side pavilion with bamboo shutters, high thatch ceiling, low hanging Indian style lamps, candlelit tables draped in white linens, extremely comfortable padded armchairs, covered in chiffon. Upper tier of restaurant has open kitchen with tandoor ovens on view. Waiters wear traditional Indian dress.

Contemporary take on Indian classics with a Mauritian twist. Traditional flavours and spices of India are mixed with modern cooking techniques. A la carte and tasting menus with wine pairing are available. Dishes are designed to be shared. We recommend tandoori salmon, crispy papad seabass and paper dosa for appetizers and for main courses – slow cooked spicy lamb shank, lobster tandoori, chicken dum biryani and paneer burji. You really should try the motichoor ladoo for dessert. If this is not to your taste, try Safran chocolate delight or a kulfi instead. If Indian cuisine is new to you we recommend you try one of the tasting menus.

All tables for two on the lower tier, overlooking the beach, are a good option but table 5 is the most romantic and intimate. If Indian cooking is your passion, ask for a stool at the counter of the open kitchen from where you can watch chefs at work.

Aquapazza

“Set at the water’s edge, our chic open-air restaurant serves Chef Sergio Favata’s Italian specialties, from stone-baked pizza and fresh pasta to locally caught seafood, expertly paired with our sommelier’s curated wine list.”

Standing on wooden stilts, it is a stylish restaurant serving contemporary Italian cuisine, with a focus on seafood. Originating in Naples, the name Acquapazza means crazy water and refers to the bubbling of boiling water when cooking.

Illuminated sculptures and torches along the pathway guide guests to the restaurant. Enter into split level restaurant with steps leading down to bar and lower deck. Unusual water features, candlelit tables with teak and red armchairs, wood deck with lanterns hanging from wood posts on lower tier. Upper tier has stone walls and plush red décor with view into open kitchen.

Contemporary Italian serving classic and regional dishes with an emphasis on seafood. Specialities include pizza Piemontese with black truffle, linguine ai ricci di mare with local sea urchin and a tomato-less Vincis grassi lasagna, taken from a 15th century recipe. However, we recommend you also try beef carpaccio, caprese salad or the local selection of crudo seafood for starters followed by risotto with seafood and lobster bisque, oven roasted dorado or seared paprika marinated tuna for fish lovers. For carnivores, there isn’t a great deal of choice but we suggest you try beef tenderloin or roasted chicken Italian style. Children and the less adventurous will enjoy pizzas cooked to order in the wood fire pizza oven.

Bar on the waters edge as you enter restaurant is a relaxed venue for pre or post dinner cocktails. Menu also served at bar should you wish to eat there. Mixologists on hand to mix a vast array of cocktails or simply to serve you a cool beer or glass of wine.

Location: On the lagoon at the Four Seasons Resort. Coastal Road. Beauchamp

Le Pescatore

“With a panoramic view from its Creole verandah over the bay of Trou aux Biches, Le Pescatore is one of the best places on the island for watching the sunset”

It is also very popular, with celebrities from around the world. Always booked to capacity, ensure you reserve a table well in advance.

Colonial feel with black and white floor tiles, wood chairs with red upholstery, subdued lighting and white louvred floor to ceiling doors, which fold back and lead onto terrace. Outdoor tiled elevated Creole terrace has palm trees providing shade and looks directly down onto the beach. Wrought iron balustrade separates terrace from beach.

Mainly fish and seafood in traditional Mauritian and French style – limited meat options. There are choices of set menus or a la carte, with an amuse bouche served beforehand. For appetizers we recommend tuna with melon and ginger, heart of palm braised with truffles and crab millefeuille. Main courses we enjoy are lobster in ginger and sake sauce and berry fish with a spice crumb. Our non fish eater recommends carnivores try the tasty lamb with orange and vanilla. If you can manage dessert after the large main courses, crème brulee, roast pineapple or chocolate delight with fresh ginger are good.

Eclectic list of world wines with a strong French contingent.

The best tables are on the terrace or at the front of the restaurant overlooking beach and the sea.

The Plantation

Located in a planter’s house directly on the beach, The Plantation is situated in a spectacular setting, with tables just a few metres away from the ocean.

Romantic and intimate vibe. Known as one of the island’s favourites, The Plantation is very often fully booked so reserve your table well in advance. Although the restaurant has its own driveway this seems to be permanently locked, so park in the car park at The Residence Hotel and walk through the jasmine scented gardens to the restaurant. Mauritian cooking classes are also available at certain times of the year.

Set within an old planter’s house with original brickwork still intact. Small indoor area has five or six tables but is only used on the very rare occasions when outdoors is unsuitable. The main focus of the restaurant is on the wood deck outside overlooking the Indian Ocean. Polished wood tables, candlelit and dressed with white linens in the evening, wicker chairs and stone steps leading down directly to the beach. Large white umbrellas provide shade during the day, with blinds being lowered in the evening if the wind becomes too blustery.

Creole, seafood and Asian influences. At lunch time the menu has a selection of pizzas, burgers and sandwiches alongside more exotic choices. In the evening the menu is decidedly more Asian and Creole plus twice a week, there is a themed buffet, the most popular of which is the seafood buffet, complete with entertainment.

Best to book one of the six tables directly overlooking the beach on the outdoor terrace.

Le Chateau de Bel Ombre

Renovated mansion house with antique furnishings, old paintings, high ceilings, oak panelled walls and a large veranda. Tables dressed in white linens, crystal glassware and candle lit

Ideal for intimate dinners, Le Chateau, an eighteenth century mansion, has been sympathetically restored to its former glory. The chateau sits away from the hotel in a romantic and picturesque location overlooking French style gardens with fountains, statues, a magnificent Banyan tree and fairy lit oak trees. Stroll around the manicured grounds and admire views stretching from the mountains behind to the turquoise lagoon ahead. Enjoy elegant cuisine in a candlelit, romantic setting. Please be aware, Le Chateau is an adult only restaurant.

Elegant – no shorts, t shirts or flip flops. If you want to dress up – this is the place to do so.

Traditional Mauritian cuisine, with all ingredients sourced from the Domaine. Enjoy local Wild Boar, duck, langoustines, chicken, fresh fish from the lagoon and fresh picked vegetables, herbs and spices. We especially recommend poached king prawn with vadouvan spice, wild boar loin, slow roasted honey duck breast and the fish of the day as you can rest assured it was caught that very morning. Desserts to leave space for include grilled pineapple, chocolate crumble with coconut sorbet and apple tarte tatin. After your meal, enjoy a digestif of local rum.

Ask for a table inside, near the open doors, overlooking the grounds to get the best of both worlds; view over manicured grounds with its fairy lights, fountain and illuminated trees while also enjoying the ambiance of this beautifully restored nineteenth century manor house.
